Traditionally, Thyme leaf (Thymus vulgaris) is used in Herbal Medicine as an expectorant to help thin mucus & relieve the discomforts of bronchitis and mucus build-up of the upper respiratory tract (anti-catarrh). Thyme leaf is of excellent benefit for coughs and wheezing in children and adults. Thyme also offers strong anti-bacterial, anti inflammatory & anti- microbial support.

Thyme has long been known for its antiviral, antibacterial, anti fungal, and antiseptic activities, in addition to remarkable disruption of microbial biofilms.

This makes using Thyme leaf as a gentle, very weak steeped 'tea', cooled to lukewarm in a neti pot AN EXCELLENT sinus infection aid for adults - this herb is a useful tool in dissolving the biofilm associated with chronic sinus congestion, infection and inflammation. SEE info below for details on using Thyme 'tea' in a neti pot.

The antiseptic qualities of thyme as an aromatic and medicinal plant have been recognized since antiquity, and it has been used to treat malaria since the sixteenth century. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia classifies thyme as a medicinal plant, and among the indications for its use, it mentions bronchitis, bronchial catarrh, whooping cough, and sore throat.

Thyme is rich in plant phenols such as thymol and carvacrol which are powerfully anti-spasmodic, making them potent cough suppressants. The antibacterial and expectorant qualities of this herb thin the mucus that the cough is trying to expel, whilst gently healing and soothing the bronchial tract. As a result of the overwhelming research, Thyme is approved by Germany's "Commission E" in the treatment of bronchitis, whooping cough and upper respiratory inflammation.

In addition:

"Thyme also normalizes blood pressure and cholesterol levels: Thyme exerts anti-hypertensive effects, so it is an excellent herbal choice for anyone who has high blood pressure symptoms. A recent animal study discovered that Thymus vulgaris extract might dramatically lower the heart rate of people who have hypertension."

EVALUATION OF THE ANTIHYPERTENSIVE EFFECT OF THE THYME AMONG PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM HYPERTENSION - "Conclusions: Thyme herb induces normalization hypertension and keeps blood pressure in usual range. The available clinical trial data provide evidence for the safe utilization of herbal preparations containing Thyme in the treatment of hypertension." source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38290025/

NOTE:
Drinking Thyme Leaf Tea while pregnant or breastfeeding is to be limited to no more than 1 mug a week - as there is a slight potential to decrease milk supply. High doses of Thyme other than regular culinary use may have an emmenagogue effect, which could potentially increase the risk of miscarriage, especially in early pregnancy.
